We’re a 16-year-old game studio seeking a versatile 3D artist to collaborate on multiple game projects. Environment / character concept art skills are a plus, but we are already supported by specialized artists, so the core of the work is converting existing 2D concepts into cool 3D characters (often animated), plus objects and locations. This includes modeling, retopo, UV, textures, rigging, animation and confirming the model is working within a game engine (usually Unity or Unreal). It can either be doing everything from scratch, or editing existing models. You must be comfortable with both characters and environments, animation, and adapt to varied styles and themes, from realistic sci-fi/fantasy, to cartoonish / stylized, or even surreal. Although initial scope is for only a handful of projects, those may increase over time. Expectation is for ~20 hours / week, although in the first few weeks it's expected to be 30-40. In may increase again to this level in January and onward, depending on our own influx of work. You must handle multiple projects and context-switching. AI use is rarely allowed and only with explicit authorization and full transparency. See some attached samples (an example character that is detailed and semi-realistic, a couple concept images of locations you'd need to be able to model, and a screengrab from Octopath Traveler illustrating stylized visuals that require strict control of UV to craft SNES-like environments in 3D - an real example need that's outside a more regular high-fidelity style) The hourly rate is limited to 10 USD / hour (there's no point in applying with a higher value). What we do offer is the opportunity to work with real, cool videogame projects, continuous work for months or years, and a chance to grow in our studio! Money-wise, it could make sense if you account for time you won't have to spend applying to other gigs, updating portfolio, negotiating, context switching etc. The last artist we recruited like this still works with us to this day, full time. You get to spend a much higher proportion of your time doing more rewarding work. Art-wise, we are a premium-focused game studio working on real games and supporting indie developers. To this day, in over 16 years, we never worked on NFTs, slot machines, low quality mobile games etc (which are all valid gigs and we don't judge them - but it's not what we do). The styles of games we help with vary in theme and style, but it's always way cooler to work with than that. So, sure, we're not the top-paying client on Upwork, but especially if you like games and doing cool art, I think we're among the "coolest work to be done" clients! 😃 To apply, make sure you include a portfolio link.
