  • As we scale our Global Tax Team, we are now looking for a talented and exceptional Principal to join our team in Latin America (“LATAM”) and Canada. Based in São Paulo, this role will report to the Head of Tax for Latin America and Canada and proactively partner with our business leaders, Finance, Legal and Policy teams to anticipate and identify tax issues, recommend solutions, research and solve problems, support go-to- market strategies, and exercise good business judgment while performing these tasks and working closely with our US and international tax teams.
  • A Typical Day
  • Oversees tax programs, processes or projects with increased resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity.
  • Leads cross functional projects, interfacing with legal, operational and finance teams, to solve complex problems and lead regional tax product rollouts, transactions and partnerships.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders (business leadership, Legal, Policy and Finance) and external advisers in response to the rapidly changing tax and legal landscape relating to technology companies.
  • Provide trusted tax advice and interface with cross-functional teams as well as external tax advisers to implement tax strategies.
  • Manage direct and indirect tax compliance, operations and accounting for Airbnb in Latin America and Canada.
  • Manage outsourced tax compliance in the region, identify opportunities to mitigate tax liabilities and provide tax input on local statutory reporting.
  • Manage direct and indirect tax audits and interactions with tax and governmental authorities throughout the region.
  • Manage local, country and regional-level tax negotiations and implementations.
  • Manage special projects in the region. Some international travel is expected (LATAM, Canada and other locations globally).
  • Lead functional teams or tax projects with moderate resource requirements, risk and/or complexity, interacting with senior stakeholders.

  • Requirements
  • 12+ years of direct and indirect tax experience with the majority of time spent in a combination of Big 4 accounting firms and multinational companies/ law firms.
  • Strong foundation of tax technical knowledge with in-depth, practical experience evaluating and advising on international business initiatives.
  • Experience in implementing new tax rules and regulations: documenting tax requirements, explaining them to non-tax professionals, working collaboratively with tech and product teams to achieve the best user experience from a tax standpoint.
  • Ability to interpret internal or external business issues and recommend best practices
  • Ability to solve complex problems; uses sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgment and identify innovative solutions
  • Ability to operate independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations, while keeping all stakeholders informed of local issues and seeking input and collaborating within the Tax team and cross functionally where appropriate.
  • Ability to act as an advisor to management on advanced and broad ranging projects or issues.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, attention to details, while having the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work.
  • Ability to communicate difficult concepts and negotiate with others to adopt a different point of view; Convert complex information to compelling business context and advice.
  • Proven ability to identify and manage tax and execution risks.
  • Fluency in English is required. Advanced Spanish skills are a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to interact with all levels of management while at the same time able to work independently to resolve tax issues.
  • Experience with technology companies, preferably with digital platforms, is desirable.

  • Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant will need to be based in Sao Paulo, Brazil to be able to conduct their work.

  • Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range shown below is monthly, is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
