You will receive a database named empresas_dados in Excel format. Each row in the database corresponds to a company and/or a partner of a company that developed software published by INPI up to 2023. For these observations, the CNPJ variable (the firm identifier that published the software) is missing. Using the variable titular_name, you will search for the company’s CNPJ based on the name in the database. You must check whether the name in the titular_name variable refers to a company (legal entity) or an individual (natural person). If the name in titular_name corresponds to a legal entity (company), follow these steps: 1- Go to https://cnpja.com/ , enter the company name in the search box, and click search. A list of names with various associated CNPJs will appear. You will also see two fields: Nome (Name) and Nome Fantasia (Trade Name). 2- Note that many times the first 8 digits of the CNPJ will be the same, but the last 6 may differ, indicating whether the company is a headquarters or a branch. What matters for us are the first 8 digits. 3- Confirm that the name on the website matches as closely as possible to the one in the database. There may be discrepancies if the company name includes terms like LTDA or SA, which indicate whether the firm is a limited liability company or a corporation. 4- Often, company names in the database contain typos. If no similar name appears, try alternative spellings, such as adding or removing abbreviations, accents, or other orthographic corrections. 5- In some cases, the search will return multiple companies. In those cases, you can use two variables to identify the correct one. First, the software’s publication date (ano_publicacao). If the company’s creation date on the website is later than the software’s publication date, it cannot be the correct firm. The second variable is the company’s sector. Since we are dealing with computer programs, IT companies are more likely candidates. For example, companies with CNAE codes 62.02-3-00 (Development and licensing of customizable computer programs) and 62.03-1-00 (Development and licensing of non-customizable computer programs). 6- To indicate which information was used to select the companies, create two variables in Excel: 6.1 - I_empresa_similar_nome_codigo: mark with X if the chosen company has a name similar to the one in the database and belongs to an IT-related sector. 6.2 - I_empresa_similar_apenas_nome: mark with X if the name is the most similar but the company is not in the IT sector. 7- If there is more than one company with a similar name, add both companies to the database. Be sure, in this case, to duplicate the row with the original company name from the database. 9- If site 1 (https://cnpja.com/) is down, searches can be conducted using site 2 (https://cnpj.info/busca) following the same criteria. There is also a third option (https://www.econodata.com.br/consulta-empresa), which requires registration and has search limits, but it may be used if needed. If the name in titular_name corresponds to an individual (natural person), follow the same steps above, but with the additional detail that you must add all companies in which the individual has any participation. Also, since some software has more than one author, all of them should be included in the database. 10- Using https://cnpja.com/ , search for the individual’s name as it appears in the database. In this case, the name of the individual must match exactly, disregarding minor orthographic issues (such as accents). 11- The individual may be associated with more than one company; in this case, collect information on all of them. Be sure, in this case, to duplicate the row with the original company name from the database. 12- For each company in which the individual has participation, record the company’s CNPJ and the year the individual joined the company. 13- If there is more than one author, replicate the row as many times as needed to cover all authors and all CNPJs in which the individual has participation. See the file exemplos for examples on how to code. I estimate that the task will take 8 days to complete. The database has about 7,600 rows to be filled in.
