Structural Designer Full time | Remote | USD 15-17k Position Overview: We are seeking a full-time Structural Designer to join a growing residential structural design practice. This is a full-time, fully remote position with Upstart AEC, supporting a boutique, owner-led structural engineering firm that focuses on: - Custom homes - Duplexes - Townhomes - Infill development projects - Other residential structural design work You will work closely with the firm’s Principal Engineer, taking ownership of core structural design and redlining responsibilities so they can focus on client relationships and higher-level technical decisions. The role is best suited for someone early in their career (1–2+ years of experience) who is strong in structural fundamentals, comfortable with wood-framed residential construction, and able to handle multiple active projects in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities: Prepare complete structural drawing redlines, including: - Foundation plans - Framing plans - Roof plans - Shear wall layouts - Structural details - Perform structural analysis and design for typical residential systems, including: - Wood framing - Post-tensioned (PT) slabs - Conventionally reinforced slabs - CMU pier systems and other common residential systems - Design structural systems such as beams, columns, shear walls, and foundations. - Produce clear redline PDFs for use by overseas drafters. - Review drafted drawings when they are returned and check for accuracy and alignment with design intent. - Create section cuts and contribute to final CD (Construction Document) sets for architects, builders, and clients. - Coordinate with architects, builders, developers, and internal team members to ensure constructability and alignment with project goals. - Review architectural plans and develop efficient structural layouts focused on value engineering and feasibility. - Revise plans based on field conditions, site changes, or builder requests. - Assist with schematic designs, proposal exhibits, and preliminary framing concepts. - Ensure plans comply with relevant building codes (IRC/IBC), City of Houston requirements, and geotechnical recommendations. Required Skills: - Bachelor's degree in civil engineering. - 1–2+ years of experience in structural design (residential experience strongly preferred). - Strong structural design ability and understanding of: -- Wood construction -- Floor systems -- Roof framing -- Foundations -- Proficiency in AutoCAD. -- Familiarity with structural design software. -- Ability to read architectural drawings and translate them into efficient structural solutions. -- Good written and spoken English. -- Strong communication and organizational skills. Nice-to-Have Skills: - Experience using Bluebeam for redlining structural drawings. - Experience producing redlines for offshore/overseas drafting teams. - Familiarity with City of Houston building requirements and reading geotechnical reports. - Experience working in a small, fast-moving engineering or design firm environment.
